Privacy

Short version: your email files never leave your device, and there are no cookies.

Who runs this

Mailunwrap is run by ALGD LTD, a company registered in Northern Ireland, number NI744090. ALGD LTD is the data controller for anything described here. Email [email protected].

Your files

When you open a file, your browser reads it from your device and the code on this page unpacks it on your device. Big archives such as Outlook for Mac .olm files are read the same way, a piece at a time, and exports (.mbox, .eml, PDF, contacts and calendar files) are made in your browser and saved straight to your device. The file, the email in it, its attachments and anything about them aren’t sent to us or to anyone else. The site’s security policy only lets the page itself connect to this site and to Cloudflare’s visit counter, and the only thing it sends is the short note described below, never the file. You can check: open your browser’s developer tools, watch the Network tab, and open a file.

Pictures from the internet

Some emails show pictures that are stored on the sender’s servers rather than inside the email. These are held back. If you press Show pictures, your browser fetches them from wherever the email points, exactly as an email program would, and the sender’s servers can then see your IP address and that the email was opened. That only happens when you ask for it, one email at a time.

When a file opens or won’t open

When a file opens or fails to open, or a PDF or batch is made or fails, the page tells our server the file type, whether it worked and, if not, a short error category, so we can fix files that break. It never sends the file, its name, its size, or anything inside it such as subjects, addresses or text, and nothing identifying you is stored.

What the hosting records

Like any website, the pages have to be sent to you. The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages, and Cloudflare processes technical data such as your IP address and browser type to deliver pages and protect against abuse. ALGD LTD doesn’t use this to build profiles of visitors.

Visit counts, cookies and ads

Mailunwrap uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits. It sets no cookies and doesn’t use your browser’s local storage for this. For each page view it records the page address, the page you came from, your browser and device type, your country (worked out from your IP address, which isn’t stored) and how long the page took to load. Cloudflare processes this on our behalf. There’s no advertising and no tracking across other sites.

What’s stored in your browser

If you buy the unlock, your browser’s local storage keeps a note that this browser is unlocked. It stays on your device; clear your site data to remove it. Nothing about your emails is stored.

If you buy the unlock

Payment is handled by Stripe on Stripe’s own pages. ALGD LTD receives the details needed to record the sale, such as your name, email address and the amount paid, and never sees your full card number. These records are kept as long as UK tax rules require. Stripe’s privacy policy covers what Stripe does.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask what personal data ALGD LTD holds about you, and ask for it to be corrected or deleted. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
